Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is mangosteen?

A: Mangosteen (Garcina mangostana) is a tropical fruit about the size of a tangerine. It has a thick, purple rind (very much like a pomegranate), hard seeds and is grown in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. It can take up to 18 years for a mangosteen tree to mature and produce fruit.

The fruit is rich in vitamins such as B1 and B2 and contains minerals like potassium and iron. However, the standout feature of this fruit is the presence of a high concentration of antioxidants and xanthones (see the next question for details).

Mangosteen has been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems prevalent in Southeast Asia as a remedy for skin and gum diseases, parasites, wounds, burns, as an anti-depressant, fatigue and fever relief, etc.

Q: I've heard that mangosteen is rich in xanthones. What are they?

A: Mangosteen has a number of compounds, the most prominent being xanthones (found mostly in the pericarp, or rind). They're a group of compounds that have antioxidant and other potent physiological properties.

Xanthones are a new class of chemical compounds with biologically active plant phenols structurally similar to flavonoids. They're fairly scarce in nature and are only found in two families of plants.

A variety of xanthones (over 40) from the mangosteen are being investigated by researchers around the globe for biological properties including anti-bacterial, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting abilities.

Q: What are the health benefits of mangosteen?

A: US FDA regulations prevent us from making any specific medical claims.

Mangosteen is rich in vitamins such as B1 and B2 and contains minerals like potassium and iron.

However, the standout feature of this fruit is the presence of a high concentration of antioxidants and xanthones (see the question above). Research shows xanthones possess potent antioxidant properties that may help maintain intestinal health, strengthen the immune system, neutralize free radicals and help support cartilage and joint function.
